BEATS – ★★★★ – Wonderful ode to the 1990s rave scene. Filmed in mostly black and white, this was very reminiscent of Shane Meadows’ work. A wonderful story of young adventure and friendship, and nice to hear some old tunes again (Inner City, LFO, etc). IN FABRIC – ★★★★ – This film, set in the 1970s, and generally about an evil dress that creates havoc in the lives of whoever wears it is definitely not for everyone. But I loved it. See it if you’re happy to have the journey without caring about the destination. #MIFF2019
SORRY WE MISSED YOU – ★★★☆ – Another feel good, uplifting comedy from Ken Loach. Okay, maybe not. This family’s struggle with juggling work and home commitments starts with hardship and then things just get worse. Heaven knows I’m miserable now. #MIFF2019
MCEC time. This is a new venue for MIFF films this year. I’m not sold on it yet but willing to give it a chance. Here goes…
COME TO DADDY – ★★★☆ – US Comedy Horror starring Elijah Wood as a hipster 30-something son reuniting with his absent father. Really nicely done, with some unexpected twists and at least a few gruesome groans amongst the laughter. Felt influenced a little by Pulp Fiction in parts, which made me feel old.
