HAPPY NEW YEAR, COLIN BURSTEAD – ★★★☆ – I am pretty sure anyone with a normal (read: slightly insane) family will recognise glimpses of their own lives as they watch this film around a family get together on New Years Eve. Overall, painfully funny. #MIFF2019

Peak rewatching of the same ads again and again has been reached. #MIFF2019 #clockworkorange

WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES – ★★★☆ – Japanese film about four orphaned children who meet at the cremation centre of their parents, and go on their own adventure, including forming a j-pop band. Cute in parts, some interesting angles pursued, and probably a little more enjoyable for me with the retro Nintendo-esque aesthetics. #MIFF2019

THE GASOLINE THIEVES – ★★ – Predictable, cliched, misogynist crime/drama from Mexico about a kid who chooses a life of crime over equally acceptable alternatives. Was completely unsympathetic to the main character. Missable. #MIFF2019

DWELLING IN THE FUCHUN MOUNTAINS – ★★★★ – Chinese drama around the matriarch of a family and a year in the life of her sons and grandchildren. Some incredible shots, especially for this filmmaker’s first film. #MIFF2019
